magemathics.com is a collection of original A-level Maths and Further Maths practice papers, written against the real Edexcel specifications (9MA0 and 9FM0). Same topics, same mark distribution, nothing lifted from past papers.

My name is Vladyslav and I'm a mathematics student at King's College London. I barely scraped a 7 in GCSE maths. Two years later I finished with an A* in Maths and an A* in Further Maths, a distinction in the AEA, and full marks in Further Mechanics 1 and Core Pure 2. Nothing clever happened in between. I did questions, for a long time, and then I did more questions.

I mention it because talent is the explanation people reach for first, and in my experience it accounts for much less than the hours do. The other thing I'd say is to pick a target that feels slightly unreasonable. If you aim at the grade you already look like you'll get, that is the grade you'll get.

That's what the tiers are for. A is the exam you'll sit. A* is a step past it. S is harder than anything an exam board would set, and it's there for when you want to find out what you can actually do.

What the tiers mean

• A Standard. The paper an exam board would actually set. Everything is on the spec, the questions are phrased the way real ones are, and the marks are spread the way they are in a live paper. Use these for timed practice.
• A* Harder. Still entirely on the spec, but weighted towards the questions that separate an A from an A*: longer chains of reasoning, less signposting, topics combined in one question rather than kept apart.
• S Superhard. Every technique needed is on the A-level spec, but the questions are harder than anything an exam board would set, closer in spirit to the AEA, STEP or MAT. Not a fair predictor of your grade, and not meant to be. These are for fun, and for people applying somewhere that sets an admissions test.
